The maker

Anthony Endean

British-born, Anthony Charles Endean lives in Finland with his wife Simona, whose support carries the work, and their son Raphael, who brings ideas and contributions of his own.

His work sits where fine woodworking, sculpture and fashion meet.

He trained as a cabinet maker at the London College of Furniture, under a teacher who treated no idea as impossible and encouraged the most ambitious endeavours. That open mind, and a care for every detail, have stayed with him since and earned the trust of clients in many countries.

Mojo designs are inspired by nature. Anthony handcrafts each piece. Nature decides the grain and the figure, so no two are alike. This is what bespoke means.

His hope is a simple one: that those who carry and wear these pieces enjoy them as much as he has enjoyed making them.

How a piece is made

Wood is the structure
and the expression.

Onda Scura. Panels of dark, rolling grain set into pale sides, under a broad arched handle with an oval opening. The grain moves like water across the front.

Choosing the board

Each piece starts with a board chosen for its figure: rolling grain, burl eyes, a stripe of colour. The wood decides a great deal of what the piece will be.

Selas. One face in deep teal burl with a red stripe; the other in red burl with a teal stripe. A pale burl handle joins the two.

Shaping by hand

Body, handle and opening are cut and sculpted individually. Curves are refined until the bag sits well in the hand and the weight feels right.

Gemma. A swelling form, half dark red and half pale, with an opening at the top.

Finishing

Surfaces are brought to a deep, even polish that shows the grain in full. Interiors are lined, and the piece is checked, photographed and documented.

Photographs show finished studio pieces. Documentary photographs of the making process will be added as commissions are recorded.
